The Bonanza store brand sees the day in May 1973 as Les Marchés publics Bonanza – situated on
Pie-IX Boulevard in Montreal’s north end. It is the initiative of Mr. Marcel Lalumière who, as
proprietor at the time, decided to establish a supermarket that offered fruits and vegetables in
large quantities on over-sized tables, as well as a vast variety of grocery products on well-stocked
shelves. Towards the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, the Bonanza label reached the
height of its popularity, with eight stores throughout the island of Montreal and Laval. Since November
1997, all efforts are focused on one store situated on Jean-Talon Street East. Bonanza has retained the
character that originally defined it as a unique supermarket where a profusion of goods can be found
under one roof.
